Huebner Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Society of the 1st Infantry Division
Introduction
The 1st Infantry Division Foundation offers several scholarship opportunities for eligible dependents of soldiers associated with the Division. These awards are competitive and made possible through donations from members and supporters of the Division. Below are the available scholarship categories, eligibility rules, award amounts, selection criteria and application instructions.
Available Scholarship Types
- DePuy Scholarship: These certificates were issued beginning in 2005 to children of fallen soldiers. If you believe you received a DePuy certificate but cannot find the paperwork, contact Jen Sanford at 215-740-0669 or email the Foundation at 1stIDFdnPA@gmail.com for verification.
- Huebner — Colleges and Universities: Named for Lt. Gen. Clarence L. Huebner, commander of the Big Red One in World War II. Competitive awards for descendants of former Division members and children of active-duty 1st Infantry Division soldiers and attached units.
- Huebner — Trade and Technical Schools (New Category): A new category to support students pursuing accredited technical or vocational training.
- Robert R. McCormick Scholarship (New Category): For dependents of active-duty soldiers.
Huebner Scholarships — Colleges and Universities
Eligibility
- High school seniors who are children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren of soldiers who have served in the 1st Infantry Division, and children of active-duty 1st Infantry Division soldiers and attached units, may apply.
- Awards may be used at any accredited college or university.
Award Amount
- Up to $15,000 in total, paid to the institution in up to four annual installments (maximum $3,750 per year).
- If tuition and approved school charges are less than the scholarship amount, payments will be limited to the institution’s billed costs (tuition and supply fees).
- All payments are issued directly to the educational institution.

Colleges & Universities Program Notes
- The Foundation’s scholarship committee reviews applications and awards scholarships to the most deserving candidates from among applicants who meet eligibility requirements.
- In 2024 the Foundation funded sixteen Huebner scholarships of $15,000 each (paid over four years). In 2025, 77 students applied; the committee selected 15 primary recipients and two alternates. The Foundation expects to expand the number of awards as funding grows and encourages students to apply for the 2026 school year.
Huebner — Trade and Technical Schools
Eligibility
- High school seniors with a demonstrated technical background and satisfactory academic record.
- The vocational, trade or technical school must be an accredited program; multi-year programs are acceptable.
- Applicants will be evaluated on their achievements and the credibility of the chosen program.
Award Amount
- Payments will be determined based on tuition and related school costs and will not exceed $15,000 total over up to four years.
- If the institution’s charges are less than the scholarship amount, disbursements will be limited to billed costs.
- All checks are payable to the accredited institution.
Selection Criteria
- Grade point average
- Career objectives and vocational goals
- Insight provided in the applicant’s essay about the chosen occupation or field
Application Requirements (Colleges/Universities and Trade/Technical)
Please submit the following; incomplete applications will not be accepted.
1. Complete, signed application form (if incomplete, application is disqualified). Check the Foundation website for the correct application form for either the Colleges & Universities or the Trade & Technical School category.
2. Essay:
- Colleges & Universities: Identify a major problem facing the United States today, analyze it and propose your recommendations for solving it (approximately 200 words).
- Trade & Technical Schools: Explain why you chose your particular occupation or field (approximately 150 words).
3. Official or school copy of your most recent high school transcript showing GPA and class rank (if available) and standardized test scores (SAT, ACT, etc.). If you attend a vocational school, include those transcripts as well.
4. Letter of acceptance from the college, university, or trade/technical school you plan to attend.
5. Two letters of recommendation from non-relatives. For the Colleges & Universities category, one recommendation must come from a high school principal, guidance counselor, or teacher. For Trade & Technical, recommenders may include a guidance counselor, teacher or employer.
6. Proof that your parent or grandparent served with the 1st Infantry Division. It is the applicant’s responsibility to verify and document Division service. If discharge papers do not explicitly list service with the 1st Infantry Division, you must provide additional documentation to establish eligibility.
Submission Details and Deadlines
- Deadline: The Foundation must receive your completed application and supporting documents by April 30, 2026 for consideration for the following academic year.
- Do not staple documents. The Foundation will acknowledge receipt of each application.
- Incomplete submissions will not be considered by the Scholarship Committee.
