Overview
The Walter Byers Graduate Scholarship is the NCAA’s top academic honor, created to acknowledge and support extraordinary student-athletes who pair excellent academic records with notable leadership and service. Named after Walter Byers, the NCAA’s first executive director, the award helps recipients pursue graduate studies in any discipline.
Eligibility
- Current graduating senior at an institution that is an NCAA member
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 on a 4.0 scale
- Competed in intercollegiate athletics at the varsity level
- Plans to enroll full time in an accredited graduate program
- Demonstrates outstanding character, leadership, and commitment to service
How to Apply
Institutions must submit nominations through their Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) or an authorized administrator.
Required nomination materials:
- Completed nomination form
- Official undergraduate transcript(s)
- Personal statement outlining academic objectives, leadership roles, and honors received
- At least one letter of recommendation addressing academic, athletic, and personal accomplishments
Selection Considerations
Nominees are evaluated on:
- Academic record and intellectual engagement during undergraduate study
- Extent and impact of varsity athletic participation and team contribution
- Leadership and service that positively influenced campus or community
- Potential to make meaningful contributions in the chosen field of graduate study
Award Details
- Two scholars selected each year (one female and one male)
- Each recipient receives $24,000 to apply toward graduate study
- The scholarship is a one-time award (nonrenewable) and must be used for enrollment in an accredited graduate program

- Nominations open: September 15, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. EST
- Nominations close: January 5, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. EST
- Finalists notified: Early March 2026
- Virtual interviews for finalists: March 13, 2026
